KISII,Kenya, Mar, 7 – Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Jwan was in Kisii county on Monday to supervise the commencement of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.

Dr. Jwan had earlier in the morning presided over the distribution of examination materials to 113 primary schools in Kisii central sub county.

In his routine brief of the exams, he revealed that a female candidate would be sitting for her exams at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after giving birth on Sunday.

“There is one female student in Tago sub county who delivered yesterday, the candidate is at Kisii hospital. Arrangements have been made that she takes her exams because she has indicated she is ready to take the exams,” said Jwan.

Meanwhile no one was injured after a fire incident was reported at Kiong’ong’o Primary school in Kitutu Central sub county on the wee hours of Monday. Exams proceeded as expected after education officials and security officer toured the institution.

“The fire incident was reported at 2.30 am. It started from an accident in one of the classrooms next to the library. No one was hurt. It has nothing to do with the exams,” he said.

Jwan said the Kisii has a total of 33,104 candidates, making it one of the county’s with the highest number of candidates this year nationwide.

Out of the total, 16,953 are boys while16,187 girls.

“All security officers, invigilators, supervisors are well briefed. This is a multi-agency security approach. We have all internalized what needs to be done and everyone is doing what needs to be done.Normally we do not have any issues with KCPE, it is very smooth,”

According to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), a total of 1,225,693 candidates are sitting the examinations.
