NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 12- After three days of an intense operation against the Boda Boda operators in the country, the government has stopped.
This does not mean that the sector is now reformed. How does the government then intend to fix the mess in the sector?
It all started after the March 4 incident that involved a United Nations staff along Wangari Maathai road.
The lady had been involved in a road accident when she was accosted by rogue riders, who sexually assaulted her.
An incident report seen by Shahidi News indicated that the victim was stripped off her clothes “while some touched her breasts and inserted fingers in her private part.”
Days later, the video of the incident emerged, sparking massive outrage across the country.
Chief Justice Martha Koome, President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga condemned the incident.
President Kenyatta would later announce a countrywide operation against the operators, on the day the world marked International Women’s Day.
But while a majority of Kenyans welcomed it, politicians didn’t.
Politicians allied to both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions condemned the police for alleged harassment against Boda Boda operators.
So, what next?
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi has revealed an elaborate plan that if implemented will lead to major reforms in the sector.
The plan is to register all operators across the country with the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA).
“The President has since lifted the Sh5,000 fee,” Matiangi said.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Crime Journalists Association of Kenya (CJAK), the Cabinet Secretary said after the government will then develop a digital register.
Thereafter, more than 2 million operators will be given a smart card.
“The smart card will also be used as an NHIF card,” Matiangi said.
“This is an important sector that we cannot ignore.”
Every day, he said there are 22 million rides across the country.
“This is such an important sector to our country. Imagine how much is made every day if they charge a minimum of Sh50,” he said.
