NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 13- Deputy President William Ruto has received a major political boost in his quest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta after political heavyweights from the vote-rich Kiambu County joined his Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi ditched the ruling Jubilee Party and joined DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Wamatangi is the current Senate Majority Whip.
“My feet are on fire because I came here running. I have consulted with vegetable vendors at the market, small and medium business people, my family, and even church leaders and they told me, if I want to move to the next level, I must join UDA,” Wamatangi said.
He said that his move was long overdue and promised to popularize UDA in Kiambu the same way he campaigned for the Jubilee Party in 2013 (TNA/URP) and 2017
“Those who care know very well about every step you (DP Ruto) took to ensure Jubilee was the most popular party. Now I am here and wherever you are going I will be here with you and ensure UDA is the most prominent party and that it will be respected as much as Jubilee was respected,” the Senator said.
Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo also joined the coalition with his Tujibee party.
Chama Cha Kazi party leader Moses Kuria also joined the coalition.
Kiambu Speaker Stephen Ndichu recently led a group of 30 Members of the County Assembly to join the party. They were formally in Jubilee.
“We are with the Chief Hustler up to State House,” Kabogo said.
“There comes a time, when the will of the people Must prevail. I have taken time to listen to the great people of the Mountain and the decision is now made. Kenya Kwanza it is.”
DP Ruto committed to ensuring the interest of the Mt Kenya region is defended if he is elected the next President on August 9, polls.
“Like any other part of our country, we shall ensure the people of Mt Kenya region are equally served and protected,” he said.
He also spoke on his plans to improve the agricultural sector in the country.
