NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 16- Tension is high in Samburu after gunmen killed a police officer in the latest incident of insecurity in the area.
The gunmen said to have been many, raided a police post within the vast County and killed the officer who was on duty, before escaping with four rifles.
Security sources in the area told Shahidi News that they also stole 200 bullets during the attack.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the gunmen were on a motorcycle when they attacked Lodokojek police post on Tuesday night. The deceased officer was identified as Constable Joel Muchai.
Another officer sustained gunshot injuries, authorities said.
They then broke a metal box that had four G3 rifles and escaped with them.
Police in the area said they heard gunshots from the post and when they checked they found the two officers lying in a pool of blood with the guns missing.
The two injured officers were rushed to Maralal county referral hospital where Muchai was pronounced dead on arrival.
Constable Erick Miano was admitted and is undergoing treatment in a stable condition with gunshot injuries in the stomach and the right hand.
A hunt for the gunmen is ongoing.
Rift Valley police boss Tom Odero said they had sent teams to investigate and pursue the attackers.
It is believed the attackers had monitored the post and established its strength before the attack was launched.
The area has been experiencing a number of security challenges in the recent past amid efforts by authorities to address them.
Bandits on revenge missions attack the area and steal animals. Others do so for cultural purposes.
A number of security officers have been deployed there to address the menace.
