NAIROBI,Kenya, Mar, 19 – The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) says it is investigating an incident where Police officers executed two suspected robbers along the Thika superhighway.
The shocking incident was captured on video by witnesses with the police officers involved in the incident said to be domiciled at the Pangani Police Division.
The incident continues to spark outrage and condemnation from Kenyans with human rights organizations calling for the immediate arrest of the officers. It is further alleged that the officers accused of executing the two are part of the dreaded, infamous ‘Pangani 6 police squad’.
The pangani 6 made headlines after its leader Ahmed Rashid was caught on camera shooting dead two suspects in Eastleigh back in 2017.
The unit operates in Pangani, Mathare and Eastleigh neighborhoods.
IPOA CEO Ann Makori said that a Rapid Response Team has since been dispatched and investigating the incident.
“A rapid response team has responded to these reports. On completion of investigations, where fault is found, the authority shall not hesitate to make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution,” she said.
Police in their report posted on their official Twitter account said that their officers who were on patrol responded to a robbery incident in Pangani.
It is reported that a woman had been robbed off her phone and earrings at gunpoint by two men on a motorcycle who then fled towards the Thika Superhighway. Police chased after them and the two defied orders to stop prompting a shootout and the two were fatally injured.
The now-viral video however contradicts the version of events from the police. The video shows two men lying on the tarmac next to a white car, one of four men standing is then seen walking away where he fires his gun twice.
Police also say that they retrieved one black revolver with six rounds of ammunition, a brown knife and four smartphones.
Police in Kenya have made headlines for all the wrong reasons with the recent case tantamount to extra judicial killings now seeing Kenyans call for justice and the immediate arrest of perpetrators.
