NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 23- After keeping her political cards close to the chest, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has officially declared her support to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Karua made the announcement on Wednesday, after a closed-door meeting with Odinga.
“I am committed to popularise the Azimio presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga and his 10-point agenda,” Karua said.
Her party has also joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition, whose flag bearer is the Orange Democratic Movement leader.
“Martha Karua has paid a heavy price in the struggle for the second liberation of this country; she has stood firm when very few dared,” the former Prime Minister said.
It had remained a matter of speculation on whether she would support Odinga or Deputy president William Ruto.
In a previous interview, Karua was categorical that in a contest between Odinga and the Deputy President, she would support the former Prime Minister.
Chama Cha Kazi party leader Moses Kuria was wooing her to Kenya Kwanza.
“She stood up and told truth to the system,” Odinga said on Wednesday.
Karua was formerly in the One Kenya Alliance, whose fate now is hanging in the balance after individual parties joined Azimio.
According to the law, only a party can join a coalition.
Former Vice President and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been insisting on Odinga’s coalition to be renamed Azimio-One Kenya, failure to which he warned it could be a deal-breaker.
Musyoka recently met President Uhuru Kenyatta and KANU leader Gideon Moi at his home in Karen.
President Kenyatta is the Azimio la Umoja coalition patron and is rooting for Odinga to succeed him, once his term lapses on August 9.
