KISUMU,Kenya, Mar, 27 – Protests ensued Sunday as a section of students from Maseno university engaged police in running battles following the murder of one of their own Friday evening.
According to preliminary reports, third year System information student James Omollo was found dead after being stabbed multiple times. His body was discovered on Saturday.
Medical reports indicated that the deceased sustained stab wounds on his back as police say that he was allegedly accosted by unknown men while walking to his hostel after a night out with friends.
Transport along the busy kisumu-Busia road was affected as irate students erected boulders along the road in protests that ensued for hours.
The incident comes just days after the student body raised concerns over increased insecurity within the learning institution. Students are said to have reported several mugging cases however little has been done to address it according to them.
“We have been complaining about insecurity but nothing has been done to address the problem. It is unfortunate how we are being targeted by thugs,” said Boaz Mulanya, a student.
Normalcy is said to have resumed at around 6pm as police say investigations int the murder have already been launched.
Police reports meanwhile reveal that a student might have been involved in the incident that saw the deceased body disposed off in a thicket near his hostel.
“From our preliminary investigations, we have already identified a key suspect and we are on his trail,” said area police commander David Nyabuto.
A forensic analysis of the deceased’s phone meanwhile reveal that the deceased received a message from a suspected student threatening him.
