NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 28- Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has a reason to smile after her main rival dropped from the gubernatorial race.
Leader of Minority John Mbadi, who is also the Suba Constituency Member of Parliament, says he will now focus on hunting votes for Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga.
Both Wanga and Mbadi were seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, to vie for the gubernatorial seat.
Homa Bay is a stronghold of ODM, with the party’s ticket being the surest way for one to be elected.
In a statement, Mbadi said, “
“I have today withdrawn my bid from the Homa bay County gubernatorial race. I will therefore henceforth place more effort in the Azimio presidential bid and the nationwide bid to have ODM secure as many seats as possible.”
They are both close allies of Odinga.
The legislator said that it was the most difficult decision that he had to make “in the recent past”, after careful discussion with the ODM party officials.
“What has however made it doable is my unquestioned commitment to the ODM national agenda, the quest for the national growth and stability and of course my unwavering support for Raila Odinga’s presidential bid,” Mbadi said.
“I, therefore, thank all my supporters and even those who were yet to support my bid for this far we’ve walked.”
Both ODM and UDA, the leading political parties in the country have adopted consensus in contentious areas, to avoid heightened tension during the nominations.
