NAIROB,Kenya, Mar, 29 – Mortein Kenya Tuesday unveiled singer Wahu Kagwi as its brand ambassador as it rolled out a national anti-malaria campaign to re-affirm its commitment in the global fight against Malaria in the country.

The brand, manufactured by global consumer goods company Reckitt says the move to have Wahu as the new brand ambassador is  geared to create public awareness on preventive measures while affirming the killer disease is also treatable and eradicable.

Wahu will be the face of the campaign dubbed, ‘Fight to End Malaria.’

“This alliance is aimed at fostering a partnership between Mortein and Wahu to create awareness about the ever-present threat of malaria in Kenya and our renewed commitment towards eradicating the disease,” said Reckitt Kenya Country Manager Asif Hashimi.

Kenya has an estimated 3.5 million new clinical cases and 10,700 deaths each year, with those living in western Kenya having a high risk of malaria, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The World Health Organisation’s World Malaria report 2021 shows Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry the heaviest malaria burden, accounting for about 95 percent of all malaria cases and 96 percent of all deaths in 2020.

About 80 percent of deaths in the region are among children under 5 years of age.

Commenting on her new role, Wahu said, “In our country’s health as in many other areas, women and mothers are the agents of change and the the driving force that creates better lives for families, communities and the society at large. I am really glad to work with Mortein as it continues to pave way to a malaria-free Kenya.”
