ELGEYO MARAKWET,Kenya, Apr, 3 -The Bodaboda sector has contributed a lot in the transport sector through meeting the transport needs of Kenyans at an affordable cost.
The Principal Secretary (PS) State Department for Broadcasting, Mrs Esther Koimett, said the sector had filled a gap of delivering both people and goods to the doorstep of Kenyans.
“Most small scale businesses have greatly benefited from this sector as they save on time and extra expenses by having their goods delivered at an affordable cost to their businesses,” she said.
She was speaking in Iten when she launched the ongoing countrywide 60 days’ registration window for operators across the country.
The PS who was accompanied by the County Security Team led by the County Commissioner, John Korir, said so far at least 500 operators had been registered out of a target of more than 5,000 operators in the County.
Noting that the government recognized the important role played by the sector in the country, the PS said the exercise will enable the government to have a database of all boda boda riders in the country which will help in regulating the sector.
She said if well organized, the sector will go a long way in not only improving the economy of the country but also that of the individual operators saying that it had become a major employer of the majority of youths.
Mrs Koimett hailed the sector in the county for organizing themselves into Saccos, noting that all the operators in the four sub counties were already in saccos.
