NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 10- The scramble for the much-coveted running position in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition has gained momentum after Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua expressed interest.
The 51-year-old Governor said he was ready to deputies Raila Odinga, who is the coalition’s presidential candidate.
He made the remarks on Sunday, after a meeting with the Maendeleo Chap Chap governing council.
Mutua’s party, MCC was among 7 others that had threatened to exit the Odinga-led coalition, over alleged exclusion and dominance by the ruling Jubilee party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Kalonzo Musyoka led Wiper party.
“I, therefore, with the urging of my party members, present myself for consideration as a running mate for the position of the Deputy President to Raila Odinga,” he said.
Other than Mutua’s party, Muungano of Kivutha Kibwana, DAP and Narc were represented.
Odinga moved fast to address their concerns, with a new mode of Operandi for the coalition said to have been developed, to ensure all parties feel accommodated and included.
He was ready to serve under Odinga, to ensure he implements his development agenda if elected.
Both the Odinga-led coalition and that of Kenya Kwanza, which is led by Deputy President William Ruto, have not picked a running mate.
DP Ruto is expected to be the presidential candidate of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Odinga is being backed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Musyoka, who has served as Vice President under President Mwai Kibaki’s administration, is seen as a likely running mate of Odinga.
