LAIKIPIA,Kenya, Apr,17 – Tension remains high in Kieni village in Githiga Ward of Laikipia County following a bandit attack On Saturday.

According to preliminary reports, an elderly man,Wilson Rono, was shot dead during the attack as a police reservist,Harrison Njoroge, stationed in the area sustained gunshot injuries amidst efforts to protect residents and himself.

Police have said that at least eight bandits stormed the village amidst a fiery gun battle which also saw 30 goats stolen.

Efforts to initially find the man proved futile however after a long search, his body was found in the bush.

“They drove away with the animals towards the Laikipia Nature Conservancy,” said a resident.

The deceased is said to have been herding his livestock when he was ambushed by the bandits.

The NPR officer was rushed to the Ndindika Health Centre in Kinamba trading centre before being referred to the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital.

“He is now at the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital Hospital for specialized treatment,” said police.

Residents meanwhile continue to accuse the government of failing to protect them despite numerous pledges that security had been heightened in the area.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i recently revealed that significant government resources have been channeled towards the area to ensure peace is restored.
