Why The Cost Of Textbooks Is Expected To Rise

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 22-Parents have been cautioned that the cost of textbooks might rise, ahead of schools opening next week.

Publishers have blamed it on exorbitant taxes by the government.

Targeter Book Publishers Executive Director Boniface Kiarie says this can only be reversed if the government agrees to review the tax on imports of raw materials.

“We pay a lot of tax,” he said on Thursday. “This has affected the cost of production.”

He pointed out that such a burden will be passed to parents- who have to face other challenges brought about by the current economic meltdown.

The cost of basic necessities like food has drastically increased.

With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, he said publishers have resulted to import their raw materials from other countries like Canada.

Ideally, they would be importing the raw materials from Russia.
