NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr, 23 – 1,594 Heads of Institutions among them secondary school principals and headteachers who were scheduled to retire in 2020 and 2021 but opted to voluntarily extend their terms will now be released from service, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia has announced.
The teachers who were issued a two-year contract are said to have averted a crisis at the time and greatly assisted in combating any unforeseen challenges that would have been brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“During the COVID-19 period, the TSC made a deliberate decision to not cause any further disruption in schools, especially through making staff changes at the level of the office of Principal/headteachers,“ said Macharia who further said,” On behalf of the commission I wish to thank all the principals because they could have refused and said they were tired and went home… they offered to remain in service for an extended period and help us stabilize our schools,”
The school head’s actions are further said to have ensured academic programmes ran uninterrupted during the height of the pandemic.
TSC will meanwhile commence a recruitment exercise to fill the available slots ahead of the normal academic calendar cycle in January 2023.
Teachers will meanwhile continue to enjoy health insurance perks if they fall sick to the virus.
“We were the first scheme to cover COVID-related ailments in a move that helped save many lives of our teachers and their loved ones. By last month, a total of 1,043 teachers and their loved ones had been admitted over serious COVID-19-related ailments and released after full recovery. I urge all beneficiaries of the scheme to continue utilizing the scheme to ensure that they live healthy lives,”
Form one students will report to school on Tuesday, May, 3,2022.
