NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr, 23 – The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is now set to kick off plans that will see the introduction of an award ceremony aimed at honoring the country’s best-performing teachers.
According to TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia, the plans for the award dubbed, ‘Mwalimu Award’ was approved by President Uhuru Kenyatta following a proposal drafted by the teacher’s employer.
“His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta has today graciously accepted the Commission’s proposal to introduce a Mwalimu Award to recognize well-performing teachers,” she said.
TSC is now set to kick off the process of institutionalizing the award within the existing policy and legal frameworks. Macharia revealed that education officials will work with other relevant government officers in making the dream a reality.
“ We wish to thank the President profusely for this incredible honour that is a clear testimony of his appreciation of the teachers’ role in the education sector,”
In recent years several Kenyan teachers have been feted on the global stage for their remarkable dedication to promoting education, particularly in the most marginalized or underprivileged communities across the country.
In 2019, a science teacher, Peter Tabichi won the Global Teacher Prize. He beat scores of teachers around the world to scoop the prestigious award.
Tabichi was hailed for setting aside 80 per cent of his teaching salary towards promoting education, sustainable agriculture, and peacebuilding.
The Mwalimu Award is expected to bring out the best in teachers nationwide while making it competitive in years to come.
