NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26- The Government has declared May 3 a public holiday, to celebrate Idd-Ul-Fitr.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi said in a public notice.

Idd-ul-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

It is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.

This year, the period commenced on 1st April 2022 and will end on the evening of 1st May 2022.

The Interior CS also declared Friday, April 29 a public holiday to accord all Kenyans the opportunity to participate in the State Funeral Service in honour of former President, the late Mwai Kibaki.

Kibaki died on Friday last week.

He will be buried at his maternal home in Othaya, Nyeri County.

Kibaki’s body is lying in state in Parliament buildings to allow Kenyans to view it, and bid goodbye to a man they called President for 10 years.
