NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 28- Police in Mombasa are looking for a gang member who attacked and slashed an expectant woman with a panga in a crime wave in Likoni area.
The 27 year old woman who is eight months pregnant had an injury in the head following the attack that happened as she walked to a nearby clinic.
She told police she was accosted by a man who pulled her hair and snatched her purse that contained her clinic card, ID card and Sh50 shillings.
The bag also had scan images of her pregnancy before the assailant slashed her in the head, sustaining two deep cuts.
She screamed forcing the assailants to escape, as her neighbours rushed to her rescue.
Police say they have formed special squads to hunt down the new panga gang operating in Mombasa informal areas.
On April 24, police in Mombasa arrested five suspects belonging to the organised criminal gang identified as ‘Panga Boys’.
The five were arrested in the Mjambere ward in Kisauni Sub County.
The five were identified as Abdul Shakur Charo, Lukman Said Salim, Omar Rajab Omar, Masuud Mohammed Bwana and Nahim Akinyi Ongut.
“The five whose group derive its name from their preferred weapon of choice, were armed with Pangas (matchetes) and were on a mission to commit serious crimes within Soko Mjinga Area,” the National Police headquarters said.
“They were disarmed and five Pangas recovered from them. The gang members, who were also in possession of Marijuana, were placed in police cells pending arraignment.”
A viral CCTV footage had captured other five gang members terrorizing residents of Mombasa. They were all arrested.
Police said the suspects in the CCTV footage are members of another gang identified as haipingwi.
“We have intensified operations within the county to restore security, during the operation two criminal gangs who were terrorizing resident were killed in their Maboxini hide out,” Mombasa Island Deputy County Commissioner Ronald Muiwawi said.
