NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 28- The National Police Service (NPS) has released a list of roads within Nairobi, set to be affected during the funeral service of the former President, the late Mwai Kibaki.
In a statement, NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso asked motorists to avoid Aerodrome Road and a section of Uhuru Highway on Friday from 7.00am ahead of the funeral service.
Motorists driving from Waiyaki way to cross over to Mombasa Road have been asked to divert at the Nyayo House roundabout and join Kenyatta Avenue towards Moi Avenue heading to Haile-Sellasie round about.
The should then proceed towards City Stadium onwards to Mombasa Road.
“Divert at Nyayo house roundabout and join Kenyatta Avenue towards Moi Avenue heading to Haile Selassie roundabout, then towards city roundabout, then towards city stadium onwards to Mombasa Road,” he said.
Those from Mombasa Road intending to access the Central Business District (CBD) or Westland should use the Southern Bypass, or Likoni Enterprise and Lusaka roads to avoid inconveniences along Uhuru Highway.
The funeral service will be held at the Nyayo Stadium and will be attended by thousands of Kenyans led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
It is not yet confirmed whether there shall be regional leaders attending the funeral service.
“Owing to a high human traffic and vehicle traffic expected only vehicles bearing
parking access stickers shall be allowed within the stadium premises,” the police spokesperson said.
“Traffic police and other police officers shall be at hand to afford support and guidance to all guests. Kindly comply with them for the success of the occasion.”
Those attending the service are required to be seated at Nyayo stadium by 8.00am.
“We request our citizens to be time conscious because this is ceremony that involves a lot of people and we want to make sure that no one is inconvenienced,” Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi said.
The state funeral service program will be concluded by 1.00pm.
“We want to start early so that who require to travel out of town are able to move back to their homes early enough,” Matiangi said.
“We don’t anticipate that anything will go wrong we will do this with the precision, effectiveness and the decency expected from government and respecting our former President Mwai Kibaki.”
Kibaki will be laid to rest at his Othaya home on Saturday.
He died aged 90 years.
