NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 28- Another hotel is set to close shop in Kenya, amidst an economic meltdown that was worsened by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Adding to the list of COVID-19 victims is the iconic Hilton Hotel based within Nairobi Central Business District.
The hotel, according to the Business Daily “will close its doors indefinitely in December.”
Several workers are set to lose their jobs.
The government has 40.57 percent shares of the hotel.
“Unfortunately, the closure of the hotel will result in a retrenchment process. However, we will work with those impacted to help them find alternative employment,” the Business Daily quoting an official from the facility reported.
The Hilton CBD began operations in Nairobi on December 17, 1969.
“We’re in Nairobi’s central business district, within blocks of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre and the Masai Market. Enjoy city views from our tower rooms and relax in our outdoor pool, spa, steam room, and sauna. Karura Forest and the wild animals of Nairobi National Park are less than 40 minutes away,” a section of the hotel’s website reads.
It was opened by Kenya’s first President, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
