NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9-The Independent Electoral, and Boundaries Commission has extended the deadline for political parties to comply with the two-thirds gender rule.
IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said already a number of political parties had complied with the rule.
The commission had set May 9 as the deadline but now has extended it to May 12 at 5 pm.
“Political parties are advised that there shall be no further extension beyond the said date,” he said in a statement on Monday evening.
The commission had earlier warned that political parties that shall not have complied with the rule risked being disqualified for the August 19 polls.
Deputy President William Ruto’s led United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is among more than 40 political outfits that were on the commission’s radar for failing to comply with the rule in their previous lists of nominees for MPs and senatorial seats.
Major parties which include the ODM, Jubilee and Wiper also did not adhere to the rule.
The electoral agency warned parties against failing to comply saying they will block them from taking part in the August 9 general election.
