NAIROBI, Kenya, May 10- What changed?
When Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate appointed a panel of eminent individuals to interview potential running mates, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka was all fired up, saying he won’t participate in it.
He argued that doing so would be demeaning to his person, having served the country as a Vice President and two times as Odinga’s running mate.
Who else fits the bill better, if not me? He wondered.
He would then embark on a series of public meetings including a road trip from Nairobi to Mombasa, in a show of political might, to pile pressure on Odinga to appoint him as his running mate.
His political allies have even threatened to bolt out of the ship and make it to sink altogether, if the Wiper leader is not nominated as Odinga’s running mate.
In a change of events, Musyoka on Tuesday appeared before the 7-member interviewing panel.
Like Muranga woman representative Sabina Chege, Governor Hassan Joho and Lee Kinyanjui, the former Vice President appeared before the panel, where he argued why he should be considered by Odinga for the position.
Other than his rich political history spanning decades, Musyoka argues that he controls nearly 2 million votes-largely from his Ukambani region.
Since his entry to Azimio, Musyoka has made several demands and at times, he has had his way.
Will he have the last smile in this one?
Meanwhile, a section of politicians from his region led by Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has accused him of frustrating their stay in Azimio.
Mutua has since joined the Deputy President William Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza alliance.
Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana has also accused Musyoka of frustrating him.
It is not yet clear whether he will stay in Azimio or will chart a separate political path.
