Two Women Killed By Lightning In Aberdare Forest

NYANDARUA, Kenya, May 11- Two women were killed on Monday by lightning in Kinangop inside Aberdare Forest, Nyandarua County.

The two identified as Ruth Wangui aged 18 and Mary Kinyua 52 had been tilling on a piece of land in the forest when it started to rain.

Police and a survivor said they took shelter under a tree when the lightning struck in the Monday afternoon incident.

A survivor told police they were working on compartment number 7H inside the forest in North Kinangop when the incident happened.

The women had been working at the site for days under the Shamba Programme, police who attended the scene said.

The survivor was rescued from the scene long after the incident and taken to the hospital where she was treated and discharged.

Police said the deceased had no physical injuries when they took the bodies to the mortuary.

Such incidents are common in the area and locals have been calling on authorities to install arresters to tame the trend.
