THIKA, Kenya, May 12-Police in Thika are looking for eight suspects facing robbery with violence charges who escaped from custody at Thika Police Station Wednesday evening.

It was reported that the eight took off from the station after an officer opened the cell for one of the suspects to relieve himself.

Police Constable Amos Muteti who was on duty reported that he was called by a suspect to help him go to the toilet only to be confronted by other suspects in the same cell immediately after he opened the door.

Muteti told his seniors at the station that the suspects kicked him and forcibly took the keys to the main gate.

“They opened the main gate and escaped through the roof and jumped into the outer side of the police compound,” Muteti said.

At least nine suspects from Industrial Area GK Prison were being held at the station pending an appearance in court.

Among those who escaped are Livingstone Mwangi Njau, Francis Mwangi Matheri, Allan Njogu Mugai, Charles Nyaga Mitaru, John Mbugua Murege, Eric Ngigi Musige and Arthur Ndugu Kavemba.

Bunton Kaguku Mbugua alias Bunju and Joseph Githu Nyanguthii also escaped but Nyaguthii was rearrested after the police officer raised alarm.

A report from Thika Police Station showed that all officers have been mobilized and are combining the surrounding areas to re-arrest the suspects.

Amos Muteti, the officer on duty when the incident happened has since been arrested as senior officers investigate the incident.
