NAIROBI, Kenya, May 16- Kenya’s iron lady of politics Martha Karua has made history after she was announced as the first woman presidential running mate in Kenya.

Karua, in a first, will now be Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running mate for the August 9 polls.

Karua is a seasoned politician, hailed for her firm stance on justice and promotion of human rights in the country.

She has served as Kenya’s Justice Minister under the rule of former President, the late Mwai Kibaki.

The announcement was made at a highly charged event held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, attended by among others top government officials led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi.

Karua is the NARC Kenya party leader and a once presidential candidate in the country.

“After a much search we have arrived at a Joshua who will lead us to the next government, “said the former Prime Minister.

Karua was among other candidates who had been interviewed for the position by a 7-member panel.

They include Sabina Chege, Hassan Joho, Steven Tarus, Wycliffe Oparanya, Charity Ngilu, Peter Kenneth, Peter Munya, and Lee Kinyanjui.
