KISUMU, Kenya, May, 16 – Kisumu International Airport (KIA) received a crucial compliance re-certification from Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), which lifts the airport’s safety bar even higher.

The CAT 7 Aerodrome Certification will give impetus to the international landing of wide-body jets at the lakeside city.

The certification valid for two years ensures a high level of compliance with the regulatory framework applicable in the aviation industry.

This development comes as KIA is preparing to receive 7 Heads of State and more than 8,000 delegates who are jetting in for the 9th edition of Africities Summit.

KCAA Director General Emile Arao alongside International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Regional Director Barry Kashambo issued the certification to the airport’s Manager Ms. Selina Gor.

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is currently finalizing the expansion of the existing passenger terminal building at KIA to provide an additional boarding gate area, arrivals hall, and a landslide vehicular grade parking in a bid to increase the facility’s passenger handling capacity during the continental conference.

KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the airport’s major facelift in February 2022. The upgrade project was valued at Sh240 million.

The Africities Summit is set to run from May 17 to 21 and brings together leaders from Africa’s intermediary cities to take stock of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the development agenda.
