NAIROBI, Kenya, May, 23 – Chief Justice Martha Koome Monday sought to clarify remarks she made over the weekend at Loreto High School in Limuru,Kiambu county after a section of publications online stated that she had advocated for corporal punishment in schools.
Koome said that online posts had completely misrepresented the day’s events as well as her utterances.
“I can not advocate for corporal punishment, I am a children’s rights defender. What I said is every school has rules and regulations that are derived from the law because the law outlaws corporal punishment,” said Koome.
She further said that schools can never have corporal punishment within their dispensary procedures since it was critical for the dignity of learners to be upheld as well as ensure the best interest of the child.
“Every institution has its own rules, regulations, and disciplinary procedures which are according to the law. For instance, no child can turn up to school without a uniform because the school expects everybody to wear a uniform..to be at a certain place at a certain time, and if as a child you disobey the teacher, there are mechanisms put in place for disciplinary,” she said.
Students were meanwhile advised to adhere to school rules and strive to be better.
Meanwhile, during her visit to the school alongside others they pledged to provide computers to the school as well as assist the most vulnerable learners at the institution.
