NAIROBI, Kenya, May, 23 – Joel Okongo,23, was arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts after he was accused of chopping off his ex-lover’s hand after she allegedly ‘rejected’ him.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred in Silanga area of Kibera in Nairobi on April 22, 2022.

The victim is said to be a minor and a high school student.

The accused was charged with causing her grievous harm. He was also charged with threatening to kill the minor’s brother allegedly saying that he would ‘chop off his head.

They were allegedly involved in a relationship before the girl called it off saying that she wanted to focus on her education.

Appearing before senior principal magistrate Esther Bhoke, court documents further revealed that the accused attempted to ‘restore’ their relationship during the school holiday and after his attempts proved futile proceeded to issue threats.

On the fateful day, he is said to have trailed the victim and violently attempted to sever her head using a machete before she blocked him using his hand.

Police indicated that he shortly after fled the scene into the slum neighbourhood as the victim was rushed to the hospital.

He was released on a surety bond of Sh200,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh60, 000. The case will be mentioned on June 21 before the hearing kicks off on August 18.
