KAKAMEGA, Kenya, May 25- Police in Shinyalu Sub-County in Kakamega County are looking for a 24-year-old man who allegedly defiled a 17-year-old girl in Muraka Village.

The suspect, identified by police as Charles Kidanda is on the run.

He is said to have lured the form three girl, with the false intention of marrying her.

According to the mother of the victim Violet Gitira, her daughter eloped with the suspect and had missed going to school for three weeks.

Gitira added that after looking for her for a while, they found out that she was living together with a bodaboda rider in a nearby village.

“She just disappeared from home, and when we asked for her whereabouts in school, she was nowhere to be seen, until we got a tip off from one of our neighbors that she was staying with the suspect,” she said.

The suspect who is a class eight school drop-out, is still at large after realizing that the police were on a man-hunt looking for him.

Shinyalu Police Commandant Robert Makau confirmed the incident, saying that the perpetrator is still in a hide-out but they are not giving up on him.

“He knows very well that we are looking for him and the magnitude of the case against him which comes with severe punishment according to the law, that’s why he can’t resurface any time soon,” the police boss told Shahidi News.

The mother of the victim claims that her daughter had a behavioral change in recent days, and they suspected that she was having a love affair.

“She had completely changed in character, coming late from school and drop-in exams performance, we started suspecting her,” the mother said.

Kakamega is one of the counties with high cases of early pregnancies among school-going girls in Kenya, with stakeholders calling for immediate action to reverse the worrying trend.
