NAIROBI, Kenya, May 26- Deputy President William Ruto chose a reconciliatory tone during the annual National Prayer Breakfast, asking for forgiveness from his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans.

The two leaders sat at separate tables, away from the norm for the last 9 years, when they would share a table.

For many, this was seen as a widening rift between the two leaders, even on a day when they were meant to lead Kenyans in praying for the country and a peaceful transition.

In his speech, the Deputy President also extended an olive branch to those who might have wronged him, during his tenure as the first “elected Deputy President” of Kenya.

“We have failed in some areas, I ask for your forgiveness. I also know as serving as a Deputy President I may have fallen short of my expectations of my boss, His Excellency the President, I ask for forgiveness,” he said.

“I also know in this journey, many people have hurt me. But I forgive everybody. I want us to go to this election free of the debt of being hurt and free of the debt of forgiveness,” he said.

While he mildly rooted for his Kenya Kwanza team as the best for the next Goverment, he said he was willing to accept the decision made by Kenyans.

“I know there is a lot of anxiety on what will happen with the elections…we will do everything possible, within our powers, to make sure the elections are peaceful. We will go out of our way,” he said.

“We will respect the will of God as expressed by the people of Kenya.”

The Deputy President also wished well the President in his retirement, saying “may you enjoy your legacy.”
