NAKURU, Kenya, May, 30 – One person was killed following an accident at Kinungi center along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

According to preliminary reports, a lorry is said to have experienced mechanical issues forcing the driver of the lorry to lose control before ramming into several vehicles.

The area of the accident which is just 15 kilometers from Naivasha town has been described as a blackspot.

The deceased was aboard a matatu heading towards Nairobi.

“Speeding is a major problem here and this can be addressed through more bumps so that we can avoid such kinds of accidents,” said James Kabono from Naivasha Road Safety Association.

The accident occurred at around 5 am on Monday.

Attempts by pedestrians and other motorists to warn the driver of the lorry proved futile as he could not stop his vehicle.

“A passenger in the matatu was thrown out and clashed to death while scores of others were injured and rushed to Naivasha hospital,” said a witness, James Gitau.

Naivasha sub-county police commander Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident saying the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.

“We had a grisly road accident along the highway where a lorry has hit seven other cars killing one and injuring over ten people,” said Waweru.

The body of the deceased is being preserved in the local mortuary.
