NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun,7 – An aspiring member of county assembly has been charged with defrauding an elderly man Sh840,000 after allegedly promising to facilitate a trip to the USA to attend a conference for his relatives and friends.
Appearing before resident magistrate Jackline Onjwang, the accused, Martha Wangari Kamau, was charged with obtaining the money from 85-year-old Harrison Mungai on diverse dates between February 22 and April 22, 2022.
The accused is said to have contravened section 313 of the penal code, knowingly pretending to be able to facilitate the alleged trip to the USA.
The court was informed the accused is eying an MCA seat in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua county.
On the alleged day, she is said to have met the victim and his grandson in Nairobi and claimed to be in a position to help them attend the conference.
“She asked them to get Sh140,000 each to pay her to facilitate their travel to the US to attend the one-month conference between April 1 and 30. The amount was for accommodation, food and drinks for a month and the complainants were to get air tickets separately,” the court was informed.
After the idea was mooted the victim is said to have told his relatives and they contributed the money in order to actualize their dreams.
Kamau denied the charges.
She was released on a bond of Sh500, 000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh300, 000. The case will be mentioned on June 21, 2022.
