NAIROBI,Kenya, Jun, 18 – Following days of public debate over the authenticity of the degree certificates of Nairobi Gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja and his counterpart Machakos gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti, the inspector general of police Hillary Mutyambai has now directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an immediate probe against them.

In a statement, police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said than the national police service has commenced criminal investigations into the genuineness of the candidate’s certificates which were presented before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for clearance.

“The Inspector-General of the NPS has directed the Director, DCI to conduct speedy investigations into authenticity and genuineness of all the certificates, testimonials, and respective documentation presented to the IEBC for clearance by the two aforesaid aspirants to a logical conclusion,” said Shioso.

Sakaja has defended the authenticity of his degree certificate reiterating that he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management (External) from Teams University in Uganda.

The Nairobi senator had on Friday presented himself to the DCI headquarters claiming to have been summoned but the Investigating agency denied the claims and termed his allegations as ‘fake news.

He is now expected to appear before the Commission of University Education (CUE) on Monday to prove the authenticity of his degree certificate.

Wavinya who was hoping to clinch the Machakos gubernatorial seat is meanwhile being investigated for forgery allegations.

Gideon Ngewa and Kisilu Mutisya had filed a petition before the poll body’s dispute resolution committee, calling for the revocation of her clearance certificate on the grounds that she did not meet the threshold.

Ndeti claims to have obtained a degree (Bsc) in Computing Studies from South Bank University London.
