NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 20- There are more men registered as voters in Kenya than women, an audit on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission voters registers has revealed.
Despite women being more than in men in Kenya’s overall population, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Monday said they trailed men in the register at 49.12 percent.
According to the KPMG audit report, of the 22.1 million registered voters, 50.88 percent are men.
Further, the audit revealed that the number of youth registered to vote on the August 9 polls had also dropped, compared to 2017.
According to the Kenyan laws, youth is a person aged between 18 and 34 years, and are the majority of Kenya’s population.
This year, only 39.84 percent of the youth will vote, which is a decline of 5.27 percent.
“Further analysis of youth enrollment statistics shows that the number of registered female youth voters has declined by 7.75 percent in the period 2017 to 2022, while male youth enrollment has declined by 2.89 percent,” the IEBC chairperson said on Monday, in a statement to newsrooms.
The enrolment rate of people living with disabilities stands at 18.94 percent of the eligible voting population, Chebukati said.
“Registration of Kenyans living in diaspora constitutes 0.05 percent of the register of voters,” he said.
He pointed out that, “in accordance with the Elections Act, the Commission will also submit the report to the National Assembly and the Senate. In the spirit of transparency and commitment to public confidence in the ROV and electoral processes the Commission now provides this briefing to inform Kenyans of the summary findings and actions taken to address issues identified from audit.”
The IEBC boss revealed that 246,265 deceased voters had been struck out from the voters’ register.
