KILIFI, Kenya, Jun, 30 – A police operation Wednesday saw at least 81 suspected gang initiates being arrested in Golden Key Area in Kilifi county amid increased security concerns.
According to preliminary reports, the 81 suspects consisting of 76 men and five women are said to have been participating in an ‘oathing ceremony’.
The suspects were inside a compound ready to allegedly swear allegiance to a criminal outfit before it was raided by police.
Detectives at the scene said that paraphernalia and crude weapons were recovered from the scene.
“The suspects who are under investigation for taking part in an organized criminal gang told detectives they planned to take over the country,” said police.
A contingent of police officers has meanwhile been deployed to the area.
The government has in recent weeks raised concerns over the rise of criminal gangs. The latest source of concern is in Nakuru where several people have been killed by a criminal gang identified as ‘confirm’.
