NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul, 4 – Increased police patrols in the country’s capital Nairobi is expected to be a common sight amidst increased cases of crime incidents in previous weeks.
According to available statistics, several crime incidents have been reported across the various sub-counties in Nairobi among them robbery with violence, muggings, and even shootings.
Over the weekend several people were arrested for various criminal offenses and are expected to be arraigned across various courts in Nairobi.
With just weeks to the August, 9, elections the National police service has said that officers on leave have been recalled to work amid security preparations.
Only police officers with medical needs accompanied by a doctor’s recommendation will be allowed to go on leave.
Back in February, a manual outlining guidelines for police commanders was unveiled in order to prepare them for the polls.
Officers will in certain instances be working with the poll body IEBC while ensuring free and fair polls as well as sensitizing citizens on the proper channels of reporting election-related offenses.
During the training back in February, top police bosses from across the country were also trained on how to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) during this electioneering period.
Lobby groups and government agencies have since raised an alarm over the rising numbers of SGBV cases, with the trend expected to rise steadily during political campaigns, if no measures are put in place to combat them.
SGBV training has been incorporated in the forthcoming training of all the 47 County Commanders, according to Commissioner of Police, Dominic Kisavi during the launch of the training.
