NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 6- A few weeks to the August 9 polls, a gubernatorial running mate in Kisii has ditched his own candidate and party, to support another person running for the same position.
On Wednesday, Dr. Alfred Ndemo declared his support for Simba Arati, who is running for the top seat in Kisii on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket.
Ndemo, who hails from Kitutu Chache is a running mate to Manson Oyongo of the Kenya National Congress (KNC) party.
He now says he is backing Arati and is no longer interested in running for the running mate position, alongside Oyongo.
“I am forced to drop my candidature because of the frustrations and laziness from Oyongo, we won’t work together anymore,” said Oyongo.
Ndemo said his motivation to do the unthinkable was to join the winning side.
Arati, who is a sitting legislator in Nairobi, termed the move a big win for his gubernatorial bid.
“We have caught a big fish. This is a boost for the ODM party and we are ready to receive more people who wish to join us,” an overly excited Arati said.
Campaigns are gaining momentum as leaders seeking to succeed Governor James Ongwae.
The main candidates for the seat are Arati of ODM, Ezekiel Machogu of DP William Ruto’s led United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Chris Obure of the ruling Jubilee party.
