NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul, 6 – A child is naturally tethered to their parent and would do anything to ensure their well-being.

In Kirinyaga County, however, a bizarre incident turned tragic has residents in shock after a man allegedly discharged his mother from the hospital, only for him to take her under his care in what is believed to be a cult-like practice. Unfortunately, the woman in this story is said to have died with the son keeping quiet about what happened.

45-year-old James Muchira is now under police probe into whether he is part of a religious cult that resulted in the death of his mother, Tabitha Wakathare who died at the age of 67.

Muchira is alleged to have been conducting prayers for his mother saying that she would get better under his care, that of his wife and another woman also suspected to be part of the religious cult.

The woman is said to have been in his house for the past one month and was found dead inside his bathroom. Preliminary reports show that her body had started decomposing according to police from Kiamaciri police station.

The accused brother, Evans Mwaniki told police that he attempted to gain entry to his house in order to check on his mother but his attempts prove futile after he was denied access.

Attempts to use the are chief also proved difficult before police intervened.

“When police entered the house, they were welcomed by a foul smell and later found my mother’s body decomposing in the bathroom,” said Mwaniki.

Mwaniki further said that he had on several occasions attempted to be readmitted insisting that she was on the road to recovery.

“We could have saved her life,” he said.

Police are piecing together evidence on the accused involvement with a religious cult with those that knew him well saying his behaviour changed after he was saved’.

Area police boss Wilson Koskey said the accused had abandoned his business as a market trader claiming to devote his time to preaching the gospel.
