THARAKA NITHI, Kenya, Jul, 24 – A gruesome accident Sunday afternoon saw at least 24 people killed after the bus they were traveling in plunged into a river.
According to preliminary reports, the bus was traveling from Maua in Meru county before veering off the road into the river at the Tharaka Nithi bridge.
Images of the accident showed the mangled wreckage of the vehicle by the hillside at the site identified as a black spot.
Police and witnesses said the bus lost control after its brakes failed before hitting an oncoming vehicle.
“It is truly sad what happened but we want to urge drivers to be cautious when driving past this bridge. By tomorrow we will have the complete figure of the deceased since rescue operations are still ongoing,” said Tharaka Nithi police commander Donatha Cahri.
The injured passengers were rushed to various hospitals in Chuka and Chogoria.
A recovery exercise is ongoing amid further investigations.
