TURKANA, Kenya, Aug, 2 – A contingent of police officers has been dispatched to Kapedo/Napeitom Village in Turkana East to pursue gunmen who killed seven villagers and torched their houses.
Police say the special teams have instructions to arrest the perpetrators and restore peace and order in the area.
According to preliminary reports, the attack occurred on Sunday night. Police say they are pursuing the gang that escaped towards neighbouring Tiaty area.
Among the dead were four children and three women.
Area leaders have meanwhile condemned the attack calling on the government to protect innocent civilians just days to the polls.
The leaders blamed suspected bandits from neighbouring Tiaty, Baringo County for the heinous act.
ODM gubernatorial candidate Jeremiah Lomurukai called on the Cabinet Secretary for Interior to intervene and ensure the safety of residents.
“Why are we as security officers and leaders watching as our people are being killed by fellow Kenyans? Security agencies must address this issue,” said Lomurukai.
On her part, Turkana Woman Rep candidate Cecilia Ng’itit also condemned the killings and called on security agencies to speed up investigations and ensure the perpetrators face the full force of the law.
“I wish to condemn with the strongest terms possible the attack meted on the people of Napeitom village in Napeitom Ward, Turkana East by suspected bandits,” she said.
