NAKURU,Kenya, Aug, 9 – Inmates incarcerated at the Naivasha GK Prison have protested the decision allowing them to only vote for the presidential candidates.

The inmates at the country’s largest penal institution said that the move discriminated against their rights and have now threatened to file a petition challenging the decision in future polls.

197 out of 399 inmates cast their ballot according to IEBC.

The officer in charge of the prison Hassan Tari said that the exercise was smooth.

“The inmates are only voting for the president as per the law and all those who are eligible have been allowed to vote,” he said.

“It’s really sad that we are only voting for the president and we are requesting that in future we be allowed to also vote for all our leaders,” said inmate, Daniel Muthama.

“We are really happy for getting this chance to exercise our rights and we hope in the next election we shall also vote for even Mps and the MCAs,” said inmate, Robert Kipgetich.

The right to vote in penal institutions is part of reforms in the prison system.
