NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 21- Incidents of attempted rape, assault, and injury are listed as among the cases the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is probing, after the general elections.
In a statement, IPOA chairperson Anne Makori said the authority was investigating 7 incidents that occurred across the country.
The first incident involved 7 people said to have been assaulted by police officers in Garsen, Tana River County.
IPOA says the alleged incident happened at a tallying centre on August 11. The police officers manning the tallying centre are accused of attacking the seven people.
In Eldas, Wajir County, two people including an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission clerk were injured on August 11.
The IEBC clerk has since had his amputated due to the gunshot injury.
The Authority has also commenced investigations into the alleged assault causing serious injury of a youth who was among youths singing and celebrating the winning of an MCA from Kolowa ward at Chemolingot High school Tiaty Constituency Tallying Center, Baringo county.
“The incident happened on 10th August 2022. The complainant has however later withdrawn by the complaint,” Makori said.
The authority is also probing a shooting incident in Uasin Gishu County.
In Webuye East, Bungoma County, IPOA is investigating an attempted raping incident said to have occurred on August 9.
IPOA is also investigating two shooting incidents in Kisumu and Garissa County
Despite the incidents, IPOA said the National Police Service Commission had improved in its performance, including on crowd management, during the electioneering period.
IPOA however said police officers, “be reminded to cooperate with IPOA officers as they discharge their mandate as provided for in law.”
With an imminent petition on the presidential outcome, IPOA said its monitoring officers remain on high alert.
