MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug, 30 – Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has clinched the Mombasa gubernatorial seat defeating UDA’s Hassan Sarai Omar.
Nassir contested on an ODM ticket garnering 119,083 votes, against Omar’s 98,108 votes.
Elections were postponed in Mombasa before being rescheduled to August 29.
Other candidates who sought the governor’s seat included, Hezron Awiti Bollo of Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP), William Kingi of Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) Party, Said Omar of Usawa Kwa Wote Party, Daniel Kitsao (Independent) and Shafi Makazi (Independent).
ODM party leader Raila Odinga has congratulated Nassir and his Kakamega counterpart Barasa for their victory.
The outgoing Mvita Member of Parliament outshone his opponent in all the six Mombasa constituencies.
In Kisauni constituency, Nassir garnered 21,796 votes while Omar had 20, 750 votes.in Jomvu, Nassir had 15,629 votes as Omar got 1,038 votes.
In Mvita constituency, the former MP got 24,106 votes amid Omar’s 19,086 votes, Nyali constituency, Nassir got 22,387 votes while Omar got 21,580 votes.
Changamwe final results showed Nassir to have garnered 17,740 and Omar 15,898.
In likoni constituency, Nassir emerged the victor with a total of 17,425 votes while Omar got 9,756 votes.
The tight race attracted seven candidates. These include Awiti Bollo (875), William Kingi (712), Shafi Makazi (633), Daniel Kitsao (402) and Said Abdallah (338).
Nassir thanked his supporters for ensuring his victory in the contested race.
“Campaigns are over, it’s now time to work for the people of Mombasa,” said Nassir.
He refuted claims that he is outgoing Governor Hassan Joho’s “project” noting that it is his humility that helped him win.
On his part, Joho said that the gubernatorial results in the area have clearly depicted that Mombasa County is still an ODM stronghold.
He added that by winning 23 out of 30 county wards and five of the county’s six constituencies, ODM has proved critics wrong that Mombasa is still a stronghold.
