NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 4- The National Police Service has released a statement assuring Kenyans of their safety, a few hours before the Supreme Court of Kenya issues a verdict on a presidential petitions ruling.
There are several petitions among them by Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua, challenging president-elect William Ruto’s win in the just concluded election.
The verdict will be issued on Monday.
With various political factions hoping for a favourable ruling after a court duel, tension has gripped various parts of the country, prompting police to deploy security resources, to ensure there will no breach of the rule of law.
In a statement, acting Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow said police are alive to “the anxiety and tensions this day portends to a majority of Kenyans.”
As such, he has urged Kenyans to remain calm and peaceful, saying security had been enhanced in all parts perceived as hotspots.
“As the National Police Service, we have taken all the necessary steps and measures to enhance security in all parts of the country, including all critical infrastructure,” he said.
“The public should not therefore panic and migrate from their homes or ordinary places of residence fear and anticipation of chaos.”
He has however asked Kenyans to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incident to the police, for action.
Those following the proceedings of the court are asked to do it at their homes.
Roads leading to the Supreme Court shall be closed.
