NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 5 – President-elect William Ruto has expressed his intentions to have a phone conversation with Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga hours after his election win was upheld by the Supreme Court of Kenya.
Ruto while addressing the nation at his Karen residence said that he would also be reaching out to his other competitors in the spirit of letting ‘bygones be bygones.’.
“I will be putting a call to my worthy competitors beginning with Raila Odinga, my worthy competitor which is Azimio team so that we can begin to contextualize how we are going to work together for the people of Kenya,” he said.
Ruto however said that unlike his predecessor he will solely work with Odinga who he expects to be the opposition leader in that capacity and will not entertain any talks of a ‘handshake’ government.
“I do not believe in the handshake stories, I believe in an accountable government held to account by a responsible opposition, that is how Kenya is going to move forward…..Those of us who will be working from the executive and the Azimio team who will be working from the opposition and as I committed to the people of Kenya I believe in the rule of law,”
If and when the two hold talks, Ruto said that their discussions will center around the opposition assuming its role of ensuring the government is accountable while delivering its commitments to the people of Kenya.
As Ruto counts down the days before he assumes office, he says that his government will usher in an end to politics of deceit and conmanship.
“We want the politics of the Kenya of the future, every leader must be held to account for what they say and they must match what they say with what they do.” said Ruto.
