NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 6 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice-chairperson Juliana Cherera alongside three other commissioners, Justus Nyang’aya, Francis Wanderi, and Irene Masit have conveyed their appreciation to the Supreme Court of Kenya after they unanimously upheld the victory of William Ruto as President-elect.
The four termed ‘breakaway’ commissioners after refusing to take ownership of the outcome of the August 9 presidential elections further desribing the process as opaque said that they respect the judge’s collective decision.
“We wish to convey our appreciation to the Honourable Judges of the Supreme Court of Kenya and confirm that we respect their collective decision,” read a section of the statement by the four.
The four also said that they concurred with the statement of the poll body chairperson Wafula Chebukati on the same.
“We also state here that we agree with the statement of the Chairperson of the commission which was sent to the media yesterday. We wish to reiterate that we stand by the rule of law and statutes that promote the effectiveness of the commission,”
IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Monday expressed his relief following the verdict of the Supreme Court of Kenya that upheld the victory of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate William Ruto as president-Elect.
“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is finally vindicated. We look forward to the full judgment of the Supreme Court as well as feedback from our stakeholders during the post-election evaluation exercise which will inform areas of improvement,”
Chebukati said that while executing his roles, he has always followed the law in ensuring best electoral practices are employed in the country during an election period.
“The commission reiterates that Election I a process and not an event. This press started immediately after the 2017 General Election and the commission tested its systems and processes in over 40 by-elections in the last five years,” he said.
“Therefore the Supreme Court judgment today is a testimony that the commission conducted a free, fair, transparent, and credible general election that met the democratic aspirations of the people of Kenya,”
The poll body chairperson meanwhile thanked his legal team for defending the IEBC and ensuring that Kenyan’s sovereign will is protected.
