NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 9- Politician Kabando wa Kabando has joined growing calls for President Uhuru Kenyatta to rise above the occasion and congratulate President-elect William Ruto.
Uhuru, who is also the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance chairperson, has not publicly congratulated a man who was his Deputy for 10 years.
Ruto defeated his preferred successor, veteran politician Raila Odinga- who failed to clinch the seat in his fifth attempt.
In a series of Tweets, the former Mukurwe-Ini Member of Parliament said the President should now put the past behind, and extend his support to the incoming President.
Like Odinga did in 2013 when his petition challenging his win was dismissed, Kabando says Uhuru should also congratulate Ruto.
“Common decency, gratitude, courtesy, and statesmanship demand that you now congratulate President WSR (William Samoei Ruto). Do it,” he said.
As he exit politics, Kabando said Uhuru deserved a quiet “respect in retirement.”
“You’ve done your part, now it is time to move on,” the outspoken politician, who unsuccessfully vied for the Nyeri Senatorial seat on the Narc-Kenya party ticket said.
“Don’t rub it in again. Don’t give your haters reason to ever humiliate you. Kenya has favoured and privileged you in a most special way. Show honor, humility, and dignity in defeat.”
On Monday, the State House released a recorded video where the President was seen lamenting over the Supreme Court ruling, upholding Ruto’s win.
While congratulating all elected leaders, he did not mention the President-elect’s name, nor that of his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
