NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 8 – President-elect William Ruto has called on leaders from Kenya Kwanza to remain vigilant and cautious ahead of Thursday’s huge day at both the National Assembly and Senate, where the two houses of parliament are expected to vote in their respective house speakers.
Ruto while hosting a meeting with the elected leaders on Wednesday said that their competitors could deploy various schemes to prevent them from securing the House leadership position.
He argued that if some people can use the National Security Advisory Committee to allegedly try to ‘overturn’ the will of the people then they are capable of anything.
“So I want to ask you, for today and tomorrow, please be careful, they could even possibly arrest some of you people just to reduce our numbers, so just be careful,” he said.
The President-elect expressed confidence in securing the speaker position in the National Assembly and Senate, saying they have the numbers.
“We have a very good margin of about 11 members in the National Assembly, we have other members who are not sitting here but they will vote for us, maybe another 15 towards 20, but let us not take anything for granted,” said Ruto.
The Kenya Kwanza Coalition has fronted former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi for the senate speaker seat and Moses Wetangula for the same position in the National Assembly.
Azimio has meanwhile fronted, Kenneth Marende and Farah Maalim for the same positions in the Senate and National Assembly respectively.
Both elected and nominated leaders are expected to converge at parliament buildings for the first time where they will take their oath of office.
Outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta has called on political leaders affiliated with the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Alliance to remain United despite failing to clinch the presidency.
Kenyatta had campaigned and backed Raila Odinga to secure the seat though he was narrowly defeated by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate William Ruto.
Kenyatta said that the state of the country’s politics will change in the next three months calling on leaders to keep off being ‘bought’ by their rivals.
“They have tried to buy everyone, but let’s stand together,”
