NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept, 12 – It is cast in stone. President-elect William Ruto will on Tuesday officially ascend as the country’s head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces in an elaborate ceremony at the 60,000 capacity Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani In Nairobi county.
Amid the transition of power ceremony 20 heads of state, high-profile diplomatic guests, and close to 2,500 VIP guests will grace the day’s event.
According to the assumption of the office of the president Act, the swearing-in of the President-elect shall be conducted in a public ceremony held in the capital city in accordance with Article 141 of the Constitution.
Tuesday has already been declared a public holiday bu the government ahead of President-elect, William Ruto’s Swearing-in.
Taking Of Oath And Signing Of Certificate Of Inauguration
The President-elect shall, during the swearing-in ceremony, take and subscribe the oath or affirmation of allegiance and the oath or affirmation for the execution of the functions of office in accordance with Article 141 of the Constitution.
The oath or affirmation under subsection (1) shall be administered to the President-elect by the Chief Registrar before the Chief Justice, or, in the absence of the Chief Justice, the Deputy Chief Justice, not earlier than 10.00 am and not later than 2.00 pm, save that the Deputy Chief Justice shall undertake the task only in circumstances where the Chief Justice is incapacitated.
Upon taking or subscribing to the oath or affirmation under subsection (1), the President shall sign a certificate of inauguration in the presence of the Chief Justice or in the absence of the Chief Justice, the Deputy Chief Justice.
Handing Over Of Instruments Of Power And Authority
Upon signing the certificate of inauguration, the outgoing President shall hand over to the President the following instruments of power and authority, a sword and the Constitution.
“The provisions of this section shall not apply where the incumbent is reelected into office,” read s section of the Act
Swearing in of the Deputy President-elect
The Deputy President-elect shall take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation of allegiance and oath or affirmation for the execution of the functions of office in accordance with Article 148 of the Constitution.
Inauguration Speech
The President shall, upon the swearing in of the Deputy President elect, give an inauguration speech to the nation.
At the inauguration ceremony, President Kenyatta’s Standard will be lowered as Dr Ruto’s is hoisted after he has been sworn in and handed the instruments of power.
“We are satisfied that we shall have a very colourful ceremony on Tuesday. We have given it all it takes to make our country proud by showing the rest of Africa that we capable of delivering very colourful events as we have always done,’ said PS Dr Karanja Kibicho.
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday said that he will honor the transition of power while congratulating Ruto after meeting with him at a State House Nairobi.
“Tomorrow, I will emulate that honoured tradition and hand over the mantle to my successor, The Hon. William Ruto. I am profoundly grateful for the honour and privilege you bestowed upon me to serve as the Fourth President of the Great Republic of Kenya,” he said.
