William Ruto Sworn In As Kenya’s Fifth President

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 13- William Ruto was on Tuesday sworn in as the fifth President of Kenya, amidst wild cheers from thousands of people who attended the event.

He succeded former President Uhuru Kenyatta- whom he served as a Deputy for 10 years.

According to the Assumption of Office of the President Act pertaining the swearing-in of the president, Ruto took the oath of office in front of the Chief Justice while being administered by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi.

“The fourteenth day after the date of the declaration of the result of the presidential election, if no petition has been filed under Article 140 or the seventh day following the date on which the court renders a decision declaring the election to be valid if any petition has been filed under Article 140,” read a section of the Act.

Ruto assumed office by taking and subscribing to the oath or affirmation of allegiance, and the oath or affirmation for the execution of the functions of office, as prescribed in the Third Schedule of the Act.

“The President-elect shall, during the swearing-in ceremony, take and subscribe the oath or affirmation of allegiance and the oath or affirmation for the execution of the functions of the office in accordance with Article 141 of the Constitution,” read the Act.

Upon signing the certificate of the inauguration, President Kenyatta handed over to Ruto the instruments of power and authority, a sword, and the Constitution.
