NAIROBI,Kenya, Sept, 21 – A woman and couple were charged with human trafficking after the latter allegedly stole and sold her househelp’s child.
The three, Veronica Nyaboke alongside Robert Ombati and Grace Kemunto were arraigned before Makadara Principal Magistrate Eric Mutunga and charged with trafficking and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Police reports indicate the victim Nyaboke’s nanny had just given birth at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital before proceeding to her employer’s home in Kayole.
The child was then reportedly stolen from the home on August 20.
The mother told police she slept next to her child only to wake up and find her baby was missing.
Nyaboke is then said to have told her househelp that her child was taken to Keroka in Kisii county in order to undergo some ritual and that she would be reunited with her child.
This never happened after she went to Kisii and realized she had been hoodwinked, prompting her to report the matter to the police at the Kayole police station.
Upon a search for the child, police recovered the baby at a house in Tassia in Nairobi. Police found the child in the custody of Robert Ombati and Grace Kemunto despite their attempts to run away.
The child was rescued and reunited with the mother.
Meanwhile, the three denied the charges and were released on a Sh3 million bond without an option for a cash bail.
The matter is now set to be mentioned on January,26,2023.
